Host Three months ago we brought you the story of a Baltimore County mother on a mission to make sure kids in every classroom can hear the teacher. Now we have learned her hard work is paying off. ABC 2 News education reporter Jenny Glick has the update for us. Christopher DeMallie This one has a little star. This one has a little car. Jenny Glick You may remember seven year old Christopher DeMallie. We introduced you to him in January. At the time, he told us he often struggled in school because he had trouble hearing. Christopher DeMallie I mostly don't hear when people are like reading a book. Jenny Glick His mother launched a battle to bring improved surround sound technology to the classroom. Today, she is elated after news the Baltimore County School System plans to put an additional $400,000 into bringing more systems into classrooms. Suzanne DeMallie For those children who would be at risk without it. This is this is going to change their education. Jenny Glick Research backs her up as well as teachers who have used sound enhancement systems. Ms. Shmetlz I am going to ask you to take just two minutes right now. Go to your color cones. Jenny Glick The third grade teacher Miss Shmetlz demonstrates how the system works. It increases sound by 10 decibels and it doesn't just work for her. It also helps students be heard. Ms. Shmetlz Josh, come up please Students Orange is the smell of cheddar cheese. Violet is the color of the Baltimore Ravens. Jenny Glick Even students without hearing impairments will tell you it makes it much easier to pay attention. Ms. Shmetlz You can definitely learn more if you can hear what, not only the teacher is saying, but the other students. Jenny Glick This school is one of the few schools that has a sound system in every classroom. Thanks to Suzanne's hard work she is hoping one day she'll be able to say the same for every school in the county. Jenny Glick, ABC 2 News. Host The money for improved hearing technology is in Baltimore County's next fiscal budget which is expected to get final approval in April.
